What Is An Ingrown Toenail

Ingrown Toenail Ingrown toenails (onychocryptosis) occur when part of the nail enters the skin, which can frequently result in an infection. The ingrown nail can also cause pressure in the nail fold area without penetrating the skin. While this is not technically an ingrown toe nail, but can also be painful.

What does an ingrown toe nail look like:

The side of the nail usually penetrates deep and it is difficult to see the edge of the nail. The appearance of the nail problem will vary. Some nails will just have a deeply embedded part down the side or sides of the nail. In some a small spike of nail may penetrate the skin, just like a knife. This may result in an infection and the development of proud flesh. The toe will then be red, inflamed and often very painful.

An ingrown toenail can be one of the most painful prolems you can have with your feet. Don’t bother trying to treat one yourself. Go strait to the doctor or you are just waisting your time.

I just had a really bad ingrown toenail treated last week, with a procedure called a matrixectomy. Definitely go see a podiatrist if you have an ingrown toenail!
